POSITION SUMMARY

Exempt, La Canada, CA

The VMWare System Administrator is located at the company’s headquarters in La Cañada, California. The position reports to and supports the Manager of IT Systems & Infrastructure. As part of the IT Department, the VMWare System Administrator is responsible for designing, deploying and maintaining the company’s virtualized computing environment, databases, storage and its related applications. This includes largely Linux servers (some Windows servers), Oracle and SQL databases, SANs and applications.

SCOPE OF ROLE

  • Perform installation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, optimizing & maintaining of mostly Linux servers (some Windows), applications and backup and recovery of the systems;
  • Administer a VMWare enterprise environment of approx. 150 virtual servers & dedicated hosts;
  • Monitoring system capacity utilization, evaluating trends and planning future needs using SolarWinds and Nagios modules;
  • Assist the Manager and CIO in defining architecture plans and user needs to select technology and products that will support the computing architecture;
  • Assist with the software license management;
  • Responsible for gathering and documenting requirements, designs, implementation plans, test plans, and system development documentation, change management, and Support Tickets;
  • Review and deploy service packs, hotfixes, system updates, and vendor-supplied patches
  • Responsible for defining and adhering to the preventative maintenance plans, system configuration standards, and other good system management practices;
  • Participate in on-call rotation and occasional work outside normal business hours;

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • 5+ years of proven expertise VMware v.5+ system administration experience managing Linux and Windows (we deploy v.6 & 6.5)
  • 5+ years of proven expertise required in Linux systems administration (CentOS, RHEL, OL7);
  • Linux disk management, ie. LVM, NFS, SAN attached storage
  • 5+ years of experience with Windows Server 2012R2 administration preferred;
  • Experience with esxcli commands, Vcenter topology, VMware Replications, VSphere best practices
  • Must have excellent troubleshooting and communication skills;
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team as well as the ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, customers, and peers;
  • Must have the ability to identify and resolve complex problems;
  • Able to work in a dynamic environment and manage multiple high visibility projects.
  • Position may require working on short notice to resolve urgent system or network problems;

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with Oracle databases and applications;
  • Experience with PostgreSQL;
  • Experience with Linux/AD integration – Kerberos/sssdShell;
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory administration, Group policies;
  • Experience with Security Design & Implementation;
  • Experience with Scripting/coding such as BASH, PHP, Python, etc.;
  • Experience with server hardware, break/fix, and configurations;
  • A familiarity with networking topologies & design, DNS, DHCP and TCP/IP networking;
  • 4 years technical college degree or related fields or certifications preferred but not required.
