Keeping it Fresh: Bean Me Up Scotty

If you’ve watched the movie The Martian, you’ll remember a scene where Mark Watney, the main character, grows food in his habitat in order to survive his stay on Mars.  Well, it’s not Hollywood drama and scientists were onto this idea before Hollywood.  Recent findings have shown that the planet Mars contains water, has enough sunlight to power solar panels, an atmosphere that can protect against sun radiation, and has a day/night pattern similar to earth.  Basically,scientists believe you can grow food on Mars.  NASA’s website shows a list of essential plant nutrients, macronutrients and micronutrients, that are all found in Mars soil, theoretically making it possible to grow produce in its soil.
