When I started as a broker in 1985 we didn’t create confirmations with a chisel on a block of stone as some of the younger folks might believe. They were printed and mailed out to the carrier who might receive it after the load had delivered. This could occasionally lead to disputes over quoted rates but back then, your word counted for much more than it sometimes seems to now. While being on call today can be a challenge, back then we had pagers for after hours calls, to return calls we had a phone card with about 20 digits you had to enter in your home phone or find a pay phone (try to find one today) if you were out.
